Police officers called to a mass brawl in Sheffield found a man slumped on the ground after being run over.

Detectives investigating the incident have not yet revealed whether the man was run over before, during or after the fight in Staniforth Road, Darnall, on Sunday night.

Two men, aged 30 and 34, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the scene.

The older one has been bailed pending further inquiries, while the younger one remains in police custody.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Reports were received at around 7pm on Sunday of a large number of people fighting in the Staniforth Road area of Darnall.

"On arrival a man was found seriously injured in the street with injuries appearing to be consistent with being run over by a vehicle."

Detective Sergeant Cath Abou-Ragheb said: “Officers were quickly deployed to the scene and took control of the situation, dispersing a number of people from the area and making arrests.

“We will not tolerate violent disorder in our city and there will be a high visibility police presence in the Darnall area over the coming days to offer reassurance to the community and to provide an immediate response swiftly should there be any further incidents.

“If anyone witnessed the incident or has any information, I would encourage them to please come forward.”
