From political shifts and cultural achievements to plush new buildings and sporting triumphs, here are 10 examples that give a snapshot of the ways the city has altered since the turn of the new Millennium.
9. A tough decision
Austerity having put Sheffield Council in a financial quandary, it was decided that Don Valley Stadium had to go in 2013. The £29 million venue was built for the 1991 World Student Games, but it wasn't just used for sport - one side effect of losing the stadium is that Sheffield has been able to host fewer blockbuster pop concerts, as Don Valley was big enough to pull in the likes of the Rolling Stones, U2 and Spice Girls. However, its successor is the Olympic Legacy Park, a much more varied development that features a school, a University Technical College, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and, soon, a new £5 million, 3,900-capacity community stadium. 10. Rollercoaster ride for the fans
Sheffield United players and the team's manager Chris Wilder are pictured on stage during the club's promotion parade in 2019. Both of the city's football clubs have taken their supporters on something of a rollercoaster ride since 2000 - Sheffield Wednesday fell out of the Premier League in 2000 and tumbled down the divisions before rising back up to the Championship. 11. Student life to the fore
Hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent in recent years on building student accommodation in Sheffield, moving the increasing numbers of young people studying at the two universities into the city centre rather than renting houses in the suburbs. This has had the effect of freeing up some homes for buyers - but in 2019 Andrew Southern, the developer of one £35 million scheme in Sheffield, said he thought the city had reached 'saturation point' for student flats.
