There were no New York centenary celebrations for Rotherham United as the Championship's bottom club went into the international break on the back of a 3-1 home defeat against Preston North End.

The game marked the 100th league game at the Millers' stadium, but the party atmosphere was sadly lacking, with the visitors deserving their victory.

New boss Kenny Jackett's side were 2-0 down at the interval, fought back to 2-1 with 19 minutes left but had their hopes dashed in the 81st minute when substitute Marnick Vermijl tapped in at the back post.

Rotherham failed to contain a sharp, organised Preston side and now haven't won for 12 matches.

Preston's Greg Cunningham was given too much space to cross in the 22nd minute for Jordan Hugill to glance a header home, while five minutes later Aiden McGeady tricked his way past the Millers defence and delivered on to the head of danger man Callum Robinson who made no mistake.

Jackett had seen enough of Dominic Ball in midfield and striker Dexter Blackstock by half-time, bringing on Greg Halford and Peter Odemwingie for the second period to try to spark his team into life.

It worked to an extent as Odemwingie showed touches of class, and his quality ball into the box led to captain Richard Wood reducing the arrears in the 71st minute with a header.

However, Daniel Johnson surged forward 10 minutes later for Vermijl to end the contest.

Jackett made only one change to the team which drew 2-2 at Ipswich Town last week, bringing in Ball, who had performed well as a substitute at Portman Road, for Halford in central midfield.

Right midfielder Jon Taylor had recovered from a knee injury and started, but Lee Frecklington missed out in midfield again with an ankle problem, and how the Millers could have done with him.

Odemwingie was the one bright spot on an otherwise hugely disappointing day for Rotherham who remain eight points adrift of safety.
