A volunteer from Barnsley who has devoted more than 25 years to promoting athletics has been rewarded with a award presented by Prince Michael of Kent.

Malcolm Fletcher was honoured by the Torch Trophy Trust, which recognises and supports volunteers in sports and recreation across the UK.

He was nominated by British Athletics.

A spokesman said “He is an example to all volunteers, with his enthusiasm and attention to detail enabling his sport to flourish.

“He currently volunteers as a Championship Secretary for Northern Athletics and has officiated regularly at National Championships and televised events for the last 15 years, though he has remained loyal to grassroots athletics, officiating club open meetings and local leagues.”

He acted as ‘equipment manager’ at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and helps out as a field judge, meeting manager and technical officer.
