An ambulance on its way to a 999 call was involved in a crash in Rotherham this morning.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the ambulance crashed on Herringthorpe Valley Road, Herringthorpe, just before 8.20am as it responded to an emergency call.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that one of our ambulances was involved in a collision today at around 8.18am on Herringthorpe Valley Road, Rotherham, as it was responding to an emergency incident.

“Two ambulances and a clinical supervisor attended the scene and one patient was taken to hospital.

“Another ambulance was dispatched immediately to the original emergency.”

Police closed the road in both directions after the smash, which involved a blue Honda Jazz and a silver Vauxhall Astra.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to reports of a collision in Herringthorpe Valley Road, Rotherham.

"It is reported that a blue Honda Jazz, a silver Vauxhall Astra and an ambulance were involved in the collision.

"It is understood that a number of people involved suffered minor injuries.

"The road was closed for a time while emergency services responded to the incident."
