The lockdown of countries worldwide has has plenty of parallels with George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984 – and this video taken in Barnsley’s town centre is a chilling reminder.
It shows a “creepy”, deserted town centre with shops closed and market stalls packed up.
A woman’s voice – in this case the Telescreen announcer – is projected overhead as she recites the Government’s strict instructions, enforced by law, to stay at home ‘unless absolutely necessary’, practice social distance and wash your hands.
