However, not everyone gets into their first choice - the very best schools can turn away nearly as many students as they have places to offer, they are that in demand.
Below, we've listed which Sheffield secondary schools were the most 'oversubscribed' for September 2023, meaning they were the hardest to get into for a place in Y7.
9. Newfield Secondary School - 23 per cent oversubscribed
Newfield Secondary School was the ninth most oversubscribed secondary school in Sheffield for 2023, turning away 50 pupils to fill its 215 spaces. It earned a Progress 8 score of -0.17, still rated as 'average' compared to the rest of England.
10. King Ecgbert School - 21 per cent oversubscribed
King Ecgbert School was the tenth most oversubscribed secondary school in Sheffield for 2023, turning away 52 pupils to fill its 240 spaces. It also performed well in its Progress 8 reports, scoring a 'well above average' rating of +0.59.
12. Sheffield Park Academy - 10 per cent oversubscribed
Sheffield Park Academy was the twelfth most oversubscribed secondary school in Sheffield for 2023, turning away 41 pupils to fill its 195 spaces. Unfortunately, with a Progress 8 score of -0.78, Sheffield Park Academy is considered as performing 'well below average' for England.
