Sheffield charity stores urge Christmas shoppers to buy gifts that support older people

Age UK’s shops in Crookes and on Ecclesall Road are encouraging Christmas shoppers to choose gifts that do more than fill a stocking, with every purchase helping raise money for support services for older people.

The shops are offering a range of festive finds, from toys and books to homeware, decorations and pre-loved partywear, alongside glittering accessories for those looking to get ready for the season.

Age UK says shopping in its charity stores helps fund work for older people who may be feeling lonely or disconnected over Christmas. The charity says 900,000 people over 65 feel forgotten about at Christmas.

Money raised through the shops helps pay for services including the Telephone Friendship Service, the free and confidential Advice Line and The Silver Line Helpline, which offer friendship, support and advice during the festive period and beyond.

Buying second-hand also keeps usable items in circulation rather than sending them to landfill. So far this year, donations to Age UK shops have prevented 2.7million kilos of items from going to landfill and saved 26 million kilos of CO₂e.

The Crookes and Ecclesall Road shops are also asking people to donate unwanted, quality items they no longer need.
