Opticians walk the equivalent of 10 mountains – without leaving Sheffield
A husband-and-wife team from a Sheffield opticians practice have walked and cycled 88.6km – the equivalent of climbing and descending the world’s 10 most iconic mountains – to raise money for a charity which helps young people build crucial life skills.

Alex and Sarah Gage, along with other members of the team at Alex Gage Opticians, have taken part in the See The Change Challenge, a fundraising initiative in partnership with the High Performance Foundation.
The High Performance Foundation, co-founded by broadcaster Jake Humphrey, helps young people build resilience and unlock their potential by equipping them with practical tools and strategies to navigate life’s challenges.

Practice directors Alex and Sarah showed their support for the charity by cycling and walking the equivalent distance of scaling the likes of Snowdon, Ben Nevis, Kilimanjaro and Everest.
Meanwhile, dispensing optician Ashleigh challenged herself to memorise all 50 states in the USA, while Betty, an optical assistant, has kept her colleagues and patients entertained with videos she has produced which explain some of the weird and wonderful stories behind words in the English language.
The aim of the See The Change Challenge is to raise £1,000 for High Performance Foundation’s Game Plan programme, which provides schools with free, high-impact resources featuring the stories of celebrity role models, to inspire young people and help them develop the mental strength needed to thrive both in school and in life.
Alex said: “Young people today face enormous pressures, and we’re proud to be playing our part in helping them build the skills and mindset they need to overcome challenges.
“The See The Change Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for our team to come together, get active and creative, and make a real difference to young people.”
The team at Alex Gage Opticians, which has practices in Woodseats and Crosspool, is now inviting residents, patients, businesses and community organisations to support their fundraising efforts.
Sarah added: “Every donation, no matter the size, will help us reach our £1,000 target and support young people to build stronger futures. We’d love the local community to get behind us and help make a lasting difference.”
