Make a wish as Handsworth and Hallam bring Aladdin to Sheffield
Prepare for pure panto genie-us as Handsworth and Hallam Theatre Company get ready for some outrageous festive fun with a new take on a theatre family favourite!
The acclaimed community theatre company will be back at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre from January 27 to 31, 2027, with a sparkling new production of classic Arabian Nights adventure Aladdin.
Evil magician Abanazar has discovered the secret to becoming Master of the Universe - but first he needs to claim the enchanted lamp hidden away for generations in a lost cave of treasures where only the 'chosen one' is allowed to enter.
Meanwhile in the distant land of Shangri-La, young Aladdin lives with his brother Wishee Washee and his man-hungry mother, Widow Twankey.
Aladdin dreams of marrying the beautiful Princess Jasmine but a penniless laundry boy could never hope to have the love of a royal - unless he turns out to be the ‘chosen one’ of Abanazar’s dastardly plot!
It’s a comedy-packed slice of dazzling post-Christmas panto fun, directed by Matthew Walker, who also stars as the region’s most colourful and crazy comedy dame, the outrageous Widow Twankey.
And once again he will be joined on stage by some of South Yorkshire’s most familiar amateur theatre favourites - and some exciting new faces.
“After a few of years bringing new panto traditions to the stage with shows like Pinocchio, Robin Hood and last year’s Rapunzel, we thought 2027 would be the perfect time to go back to one of the classics of the pantomime world,” said Matthew.
“Once again the show will be written by Tom Whalley so even though Aladdin is one of the best-loved and most familiar of the panto favourites, our audience can be assured that this version will have plenty of surprises, spectacle - and lots of laughter.”
