David McKee’s much-loved classic Not Now, Bernard arrives on Sheffield stage

Roustabout Theatre’s adaptation of David McKee’s Not Now, Bernard will be staged at Sheffield's Montgomery Theatre on February 16 and 17, 2027.
David McKee, celebrated for the Elmer books, published Not Now, Bernard in 1980. The story follows Bernard, who discovers a monster in his garden. While Bernard tries to alert his parents, they are too busy to notice, leading him to befriend the monster with unexpected consequences. The narrative addresses themes of children feeling ignored and the importance of genuine communication, which remain relevant more than forty years after its release.
Roustabout’s new stage adaptation features a giant purple monster, physical comedy, and live music. The production incorporates Roustabout’s signature style, aiming to entertain young audiences while offering moments of nostalgia for adults familiar with the original book. Communication accessibility is prioritized: the show integrates a range of communication styles, including Makaton signing, supported by Makaton Tutor Becca Hulbert from Arthur’s Club. All performances are relaxed to ensure inclusivity.
Director Toby Hulse describes Not Now, Bernard as a classic, noting the book’s lasting impact and relevance in today’s world. He highlights the use of mime, speech supported by Makaton, and a live-generated score to enhance the staging. The set and costume design aim to visually recreate McKee’s iconic illustrations.
This adaptation of Not Now, Bernard offers a theatrical experience for all ages, focusing on the story’s core themes and accessibility.
