Comedy, drama and the sound of brass brings a classic to Grenoside
Grenoside and Birley Carr Players and Loxley Silver Band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of the great British comedy dramas when they tune up for a revival of Brassed Off.

First released in 1996, Mark Herman’s film starred Pete Postlethwaite, Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald in the story of a South Yorkshire mining town and its brass band, both struggling to face a changing world ten years after the national Miners’ Strike crippled communities and left wounds that were slow to heal.
In 1998 celebrated Sheffield writer and broadcaster Paul Allen adapted Herman’s original screenplay for the stage with a critically-acclaimed production that had its world premiere at the Crucible Theatre and then went on to win national praise at London’s Royal National Theatre.
And now the show is returning to its South Yorkshire roots for a production by Grenoside and Birley Carr Players which will also feature the acclaimed Loxley Silver Band, making their drama debut.
The new production, directed by Henry Petherwick, runs at Grenoside Community Centre from October 14 to 16 at 7.30pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday October 17 at 2.30pm.
“We are delighted that in the 30th anniversary year of Brassed Off we have secured the performing rights to the play and can bring it back to South Yorkshire,” said Grenoside and Birley Carr Players chair Jonathan Hester.
“And we are even more pleased to be welcoming members of Loxley Silver Band to bring the authentic sound of Yorkshire brass to our stage.
“This is certainly the biggest and most ambitious show we have ever staged, filled with comedy, drama and fantastic live music, and we look forward to bringing the story of Grimley Brass Band to a whole new audience.
