The Star’s James Shield identifies some of the major figures set to be involved and analyses some of the statistical trends surrounding the latest fixture in what has been a challenging season for both clubs.

The Teams: United - Ramsdale, Bryan, Jaguelka, Ampadu, Baldock, Stevens, Norwood, Fleck, Lundstram, Burke, McBurnie. Liverpool - Alisson, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Kabak, Shaqiri, Thiago, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Salah.

The Referee: Jonathan Moss will oversee the game while Andy Madley is the VAR official. Born in Sunderland but now based in Horsforth, West Yorkshire, Moss averages 2.65 cautions per match this season. He issued two cautions, both to United players, when Chris Wilder’s side were beaten 4-1 at Chelsea in November. Moss has taken charge of Liverpool twice since September, averaging only 1.5 cautions per fixture during their wins over Crystal Palace and West Ham. None of those were awarded to Liverpool players.

The Form Guide: Liverpool travel to South Yorkshire hoping to end a run of four straight Premier league defeats, although they did beat RB Leipzig in the Champions League earlier this month. Jurgen Klopp’s men have scored four goals and conceded 10 during that period. Their last away win came on January 31m when Moss was the referee at the London Stadium. United, meanwhile, have lost their last three outings in the competition; scoring once and conceding six. They are bottom of the table, while Liverpool have prepared for the game in sixth - one place behind Chelsea, who they face on Thursday - and 19 behind leaders Manchester City, who appear destined to depose them as champions.

The Last Time Out: United were beaten 2-1 at Anfield in October, despite taking the lead when Sander Berge, who will miss this match through injury, converted a first-half penalty. However strikes from Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota saw Liverpool turn the game around, although Oliver Burke missed a chance to equalise during the closing stages. Klopp’s men enjoyed 62 per cent of the possession on the night, but managed only three more shots on target (5) than United.

The History Lesson: Liverpool have won 46 per cent of their previous meetings between these two clubs, with United returning a figure of 30 per cent. The last draw between them came in August 2006, when they met on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. United’s most recent victory over Liverpool was in January 2003, when they triumphed 2-1 at home in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals before being knocked out at Anfield. Liverpool make the journey east searching for their fifth straight win over United, scoring nine goals and conceding just once during that sequence.
