'Zero tolerance' call to beat estate yobs

A COUNCILLOR has called for "zero tolerance" against yobs in a Sheffield neighbourhood after 300 incidents of anti-social behaviour in a month.

Labour Coun Terry Fox, who represents Gleadless Valley, said the Herdings Youth Club has been set on fire twice, while 25 per cent of all Sheffield's fly-tipping and a third of all graffiti happens in the area.

On Friday night, firework-wielding youths broke into and torched a car on Ironside Road, Herdings, threw fireworks into gardens, and attacked a resident who asked them to stop.

Coun Fox said: "The community is saying, 'Enough is enough and we need to take action now'. The bad neighbours and gangs should beware."

He called for better enforcement of law and order in the area, including more patrols from Police Comm-unity Support Officers.

"We should use the powers given to us by the Government and take enforcement action now," he said.

Terry Wright, chair of Gleadless Valley Tenants' and Residents' Association, said: "The area is being terrorised and old folk don't want to come out after dark.

"I have demanded something be done now and I support Coun Fox's call for a zero tolerance approach."

Coun Fox said he will call for a meeting to discuss the situation with the police and housing management company Sheffield Homes.
