'Woman said yes to sex' rape trial told

A MAN accused of raping a Sheffield woman for more than six hours and locking her in his flat to prevent her escaping told a jury she consented to sex.

Thomas Kalaou, aged 32, of Sheldon Road, Nether Edge, denied the woman's claims that she was repeatedly raped in his flat.

Sheffield Crown Court has heard the 19-year-old told police she was raped "six or seven" times one week after meeting Kalaou in March, this year.

The father-of-one, who is originally from Togo, denies three counts of rape and one of false imprisonment.

She went to his flat for a meal and then said she was leaving to visit her boy-friend when he is alleged to have become angry and locked her in before raping her.

Kalaou said he met the woman when he was walking through Sheffield city centre after attending an English class.

He was balancing a large bottle of water on his head while walking and she asked him how he did it.

A week later they arr-anged to meet up and he bought her a bottle of wine and some whisky before taking her to his flat.

He denied her claim he persuaded her to go to the flat by saying he was "a good person and a Christian" and said she appeared drunk.

"We talked about how to make love and she asked me how I ended up with a child. She asked me how the French made love.

"Honestly, I asked her if we could have sex and she told me yes."

The trial continues.
