War memorial plaque is stolen

A BRONZE plaque commemorating the men who died in the two world wars has been stolen from a memorial in Sheffield.

The plaque - indented with the names of those who lost their lives serving their country in World War I and World War II - was prized from the war memorial at St Mary the Virgin Church on Church Lane in Beighton.

Today police hit out at the “despicable” thieves.

PC Eric Marshall from the Woodhouse Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “To think people would take such an item, which is of great sentimental value for local people. I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact us.”

The plaque is 24 inches by 15 inches and around three-quarters of an inch thick.

The thefts are the latest in a spate of attacks on churches around South Yorkshire.
