VIDEO: Argentinian band The Otherness rock up dream gig at Tramlines

They hit the right notes with a music promoter who by chance saw them playing a pub gig promoting their new self-titled album at the city's iconic Frog and Parrot, in Division Street.

Neil Hargreaves said 'everyone fell in love' with them and he was so impressed, with their energetic pumped up offering of old style rock with a South American roll, that he booked them.

They will now play a prime slot on the Crystal Stage - at the Crystal Bar in Carver Street - this Saturday, at 8.20pm.

Crystal Stage is one of the biggest and most prestigious venues forming a key part of The Fringe at Tramlines, a free entry city centre spin-off of the ticketed festival in Hillsborough Park.

Tramlines main stage acts have started out playing the Crystal Stage.

Last year South Yorkshire's Radio 1 stars The Sherlocks played a 'secret' gig there and this year's Crystal Stage headliners on Saturday are recording stars The Alvarez Kings and on Sunday, hotly tipped October Drift.

The Otherness band mates Martin Other, vocals and guitar, Gonzalo Other, vocals and bass, Agustin Other, lead guitar and backing vocals, and Pablo Other, drums, are hoping it could be a springboard for success in the UK.

They already have a growing fan base, have appeared on Radio 6 Music and BBC Introducing.

Promoter Neil said: "We are going to put them on the 'secret slot at Crystal - not that it's a secret anymore.

"It's one of them love stories when you go and see a band and I didn't expect anything from it.

"But something happened in the Frog and Parrot tonight that was a little bit unexplainable, where everyone fell in love with this band from Argentina."

The Otherness frontman Martin said:" We didn't expect it to happen but we are happy that we will be playing again in Sheffield and during Tramlines."

Gonzalo said: "We are overwhelmed. But it's great news. We recorded a self-titled album earlier this year and RGM who put on the pub gig liked it and invited us to play here. We really wanted to play at Tramlines and this Crystal Stage gig is amazing. But we would love to come back and play the main stage some day."

Sheffield music promoters RGM - Reyt Good Magazine - invited them to play a pre-Tramlines slot as part of their European tour .

The Otherness, hailing from La Patagonia, jumped at the chance to say thank you to fans who embraced their fringe festival debut three years ago - when they were last in the city.

Their album has all the wild, infectious stop-start energetic and intoxicating sounds of their influences, including very early Hamburg period Beatles to Little Richard.

It is a showcase for their big guitar hooks and vocal harmonies as they rattle through original tunes which explode before they reach three minutes, true to traditional Rockabilly bluesy classics.

Album highlights include Feedback Calling, She Feels the Soul, Selfie and Your Carnival - but the standout track and memorable title, is the wonderful Give that Face Back to the Dog with its equally memorable chorus.

But the band need to be seen live to appreciate the joyous production value of their studio work, unleashed on stage.

The Otherness are aptly named. Why so?

In a reversal of the British invasion tradition, where bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles enlightened North America on the bluesy US roots of Rock n Roll, The Otherness have toured tirelessly in the UK tin recent years, bringing their own homespun ‘other’ brand of British and European rock music back to its source with a clear message.

In the years that they have played together, they have honed a very clear and proficient style of short, sweet and punchy tracks.

They have been playing dates in the UK, with other gigs in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France, gaining new fans and significant support from the likes of BBC 6 Music.

The Otherness Tour - living up to the Tramlines spirit to further world music and global sounds - is a not for profit project aimed at promoting the protection, improvement and proliferation of worldwide grassroots music, the venues where grassroots music is performed and also the global interaction between all its actors - diversified communities of music events’ producers, promoters and emerging artists all over the globe.

Sponsor of their European tour is Un-Convention - a grassroots, independent global music community and series of events.

Jeff Thompson, co-founder and director Un-Convention, explained: "It is un-conventional in its approach, locally driven and globally connected.

"The community is driven by a not-for-profit initiative that sees opportunity for the grassroots in changes to the way that music is being produced, consumed and sustained.

"Un-Convention works in partnership with local organisations to deliver Un Convention events around the world.

"To date it has happened 90 times, in 17 countries across 5 continents.

Events consist of panels, workshops, music collaborations, the promotion of a cities musical identity, training opportunities delivered by a rich bank of global experts."
