Tyred tench's wheel of fortune

WE'VE all heard fishy tales about the one that got away...

But here's a story about the fish that stayed put... for an astonishing three months.

Scrapyard worker Corry West discovered a tiddler of a tench which had been living in stale water inside a discarded tyre for since the June floods.

The 3in-long fish was discovered when Corry picked up a tyre at Wilf Jay's scrapyard in Treeton and emptied out the water.

To his surprise the tenacious tench flopped out on to the ground and seemed to be in good health.

The little tiddler has been living in a barrel at the scrapyard since Corry discovered it.

Corry said: "I was changing someone's tyre and this thing fell out and started flopping around on the ground.

"It must have been in there for weeks. We've given it a bit of bread and it seems quite happy. It's amazing that it's survived so long."

Staff are to return the lucky little fish back to nature when they take it to nearby Catcliffe Flash Nature Reserve.
