TV show aims to give three lads some steel

A SHEFFIELD steelworks has been chosen as the setting for part of a new reality TV series that will see a tough-talking steelworker try to transform the lives of three work-shy young men.

Forgemasters, on Brightside Lane, will feature in a new series called UK's Toughest Jobs which starts on the Discovery Channel tomorrow.

Each week three young, unemployed adults will be given the chance to turn their lives around by taking part in the show, which promises a job for just one of them at the end of it.

In episode one, three unemployed men will come to Sheffield to try their hand at working with steel.

Their trip to the steel city will introduce the lads to foreman John Sanderson, who started as an apprentice at Forgemasters more than two decades ago.

John will put the boys through their paces to see how they cope in Britain's largest steelworks – and he will then get to decide who should be hired and fired.

"They haven't got to be scared of the sparks, that's where the problems start," said John.

"The trick is to stand still and let the sparks hit you. If you do, you won't get hurt. It's when you run away that you get burnt - but it goes against common sense and your instincts."

Forgemasters is over 200 years old. The factory produces some of the largest steel castings in the world and can manufacture items weighing up to 350 tonnes.

During each week of the seven-part series, three more contestants will try their hand at a different profession, including mountain rescue, merchant seamen and boat building.

Taking on the challenge in Sheffield is Kieron Morgan, aged 21, from Preston, who had a troubled childhood and is fed up of his life of petty crime, drug abuse and homelessness.
