Three flee chip pan fire drama

THREE people asleep in their Sheffield home had to flee after a chip pan burst into flames.

Two of the people inside the house on Beck Road, Shiregreen, were woken by the smoke alarm and had to rouse another person who was asleep in the lounge.

Firefighters said a smoke alarm they fitted in a Sheffield house as part of their community safety helped save their lives.

A smoke alarm, fitted by firefighters within the past two years, alerted two people but the third person remained asleep and had to be woken up by the others and led outside.

Elm Lane Station manager Bob Hadrell said the trio may not have got out if the alarm had not been fitted.

“This could have been a much different story if the alarm hadn’t alerted two people in the house to the fire,” he said.

“It serves as a reminder of how important it is to have these alarms fitted.”
