This range of gin is proving popular at this Sheffield gin bar - here's why

World Gin Day was a day for everyone and anyone to celebrate and enjoy gin and ultimately gives a platform for bars and brands to engage with the gin-loving public.

Since the event started in 2009, it has been held on the second Saturday in June; with this year’s event taking place on Saturday, June 12.

The increasingly popular alcoholic beverage dates back to the middle ages and is believed to have been first created by the Dutch, who used juniper berry oil as a medicine mixed with a distilled spirit along with botanicals.

During the 18th century, the demand for Gin was at an all-time high in the capital and was popular amongst working-class Londoners. By 1730 an estimated 7,000 shops selling Gin sprung up around London.

These days the demand is still present thanks to the great Gin renaissance of the 2010s, it has made a stunning comeback, and the craft gin market is booming with distillers keen to produce new and innovative flavours.

From the popular pink Gin to more unique flavours featuring a mix of botanicals, there’s plenty for gin-lovers in Sheffield to choose from this Saturday.

Becky Brennan, owner of the Gin Bar in Sheffield expects flavoured Gin to be the most popular.

She said: “Our best selling Gin is probably the Whitley Neil range, it’s all the colours of the rainbow. We sell a lot of Whitley Neil; we sell a lot of the flavoured ones. In the summer, it’s the fruity and the citrusy ones that people go for.

“I think people have just got a sweet tooth, and they enjoy sort of a sweet drink, and they enjoy all the berries and all the garnishes that go in it as well.

“A lot of people now drink gin with lemonade if they don’t like tonics to make it even sweeter.”

Sheffield’s own dry Gin has a strong heritage as it was the first Gin to be distilled and bottled in Sheffield in over 100 years by True North Brew Co.

Earlier this year, Sheffield Dry Gin released a limited-edition flavour to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Simpkins Sweets.
