Sheffield to play host to jam-packed calendar of events in 2020

From art, music and food to sport, literature and film – residents are in for a treat this year as Sheffield Council announces the top events taking place across the city in 2020.

Members of the council’s events team have pulled together a diverse events programme catering for all ages, interests, cultures and abilities, providing plenty of opportunities for all to try something new.

In 2019, the council, along with partners, hosted more than 400 events, which saw more than 737,000 people taking part, spectating and having a great time.

Councillor Mary Lea, council cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure, said: “Last year brought us a hugely exciting year of events and 2020 will not disappoint.

“The thing I am most proud of is the variety of events hosted across Sheffield.

“No matter what you are interested in, how old you are, how able you are, how much money you have, what your background is or what language you speak, the diversity of our city is reflected in our events programme and there truly is something for everyone.”

Highlights for 2020 include The Festival of the Outdoors, featuring the RAB Climbing Works International Festival, taking place on March 2 and 3, and the Sheffield Half Marathon, on March 29.

April 6 to 12 sees the British Paralympic Swimming Championships taking place, while Sheffield appears on the international stage from April 18 to May 4 when the World Snooker Championship returns to the famous Crucible theatre.

Taste buds will be tantalised with exciting international and local cuisine when the Sheffield Food Festival takes place from May 22 to 25.

The international documentary film festival DocFest returns from June 4 to 9, featuring thought-provoking film, while British Cycling’s one day Let’s Ride festival returns to Sheffield city centre on June 7. Sheffield’s award-winning Tramlines music festival returns from July 31 to August 2.

Coun Lea said: “In 2020, there’s plenty to look forward to. I encourage everyone to get their diaries out and start planning because we have so much going on.”
