Three city cinemas have welcomed customers back after the industry was one of the worst hit sectors during the pandemic with many screens closed for extended periods or operating at reduced capacity.

The city centre Odeon Luxe on Arundel Gate, leads with Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway in which James Cordon again voices the lovable rogue who is back with Bea and Thomas, who have created a makeshift family.

It also has Nomadland, for which actress Frances McDormand and director Chloe Zhao won Oscars. McDormand plays a woman in her 60s who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad.

The Showroom, on Paternoster Row, in the city centre, also offers Nomadland and is screening Judas and the Black Messiah, the story of Fred Hampton, the gifted civil rights leader who rose through the Black Panther party to became chairman of the Chicago chapter.

Among the films at Vue in Meadowhall is Spiral: From the book of Saw, in which Chris Rock finds himself at the centre of a killer’s morbid game.

Global box office takings in 2020 fell by more than 70% from the previous year to $12.4bn, according to film technology firm Gower Street Analytics.

Major releases have been delayed because of Covid, including the latest James Bond film, No Time to Die, which was put off a number of times. It will now debut globally on October 8.
