The maze was a treat for the senses

It is the season for wholesome family days out.

Whether you’re pumpkin picking, heading to lantern trails or making the most of Halloween, autumn is known for wrapping up warm and getting outside to soak up the cosy vibes.

Ear muffs, gloves and scarves become the season ‘s most worn items as marshmallows are toasted and fancy dress costumes are selected.

So when I had the opportunity to take the family to visit the new Room on the Broom corn maze at Twycross Zoo - I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make some wholesome core memories.

My eldest, Seth, is well into his story books right now. At nearly four-years-old, his imagination is in overdrive and anything that sparks his curiosity is immediately a winner.

So when we found out that the Gruffalo's Land of Discovery was also at Twycross, we knew it would be a brilliant way to spend a day.

Our youngest, Otis, was largely oblivious, but the wholesome vibes were achieved with his knitted pumpkin hat and he loved being able to see the zoo’s animals up close and personal - more on those later.

We decided to do the maze and Gruffalo trail first, while we all had plenty of energy, before heading round the zoo to see the abundance of animals that call the Leicestershire attraction their home.

The maze was a treat for the senses. Getting lost in the great outdoors, with Instagram-worthy photo opps and scenes to find from the popular Julia Donaldson story dotted throughout the corn trail.

I wont spoil the full fun, but the sound of Seth’s laughter as he spotted his favourite characters were something that we’ll remember for a long time.

That extended into the Gruffalo trail, which was much longer than expected (in a good way) and really took you on a journey through the hit book.

Seth soaked up the whole storyline and stopped at every scene to say the lines out loud.

So, on to the main zoo. Even if that wasn’t an option, the hours of fun we had enjoyed already would have made for a great day out.

But we had more hours of fun taking in the giraffes, the leopards and the penguins.

The agile gibbons were Seth’s favourite, he spent ages watching them swing around, play with one another and eat their dinner.

My wife’s favourite was the orangutans, who were making themselves very comfortable in their enclosure, rolling around in their bedding.

And me? The Capybaras took top spot. Something about them just makes me laugh.

Overall, it was a 10 out of 10 family day out, and certainly ticked the cosy autumn vibes box we’d been hoping for.
