New Sheffield indoor climbing centre will 'replicate wall created for this year's Tokyo Olympic Games'

A new Sheffield indoor climbing centre will feature a replica of the bouldering wall created for this year's Tokyo Olympic Games – and a champion climber is going to train on it.

The wall and training centre at the Climbing Hangar on Savile Street have been designed in partnership with Team GB climber Shauna Coxsey MBE.

The two-times world champion will complete her preparation for the Tokyo Olympic Games on the wall before it is opened to the general public later this year.

Shauna said: “I am sooo excited that The Climbing Hangar are coming to Sheffield! To me, the Hangar walls feel like home. Always so welcoming and a pleasure to climb at.

The 15,500-sq ft centre will feature hundreds of climbing problems, plus a fitness area and a café.

With a low cost, commitment-free membership and free inductions for beginners, The Climbing Hangar’s owners say it will provide everything from elite training and development to a fun and inspiring gateway into the world of climbing for beginners.

It is all part of their mission to make the UK healthier, happier and better connected through indoor climbing. CEO Ged MacDomhnaill is excited about the project.

He said: “I’m so stoked to be opening a Hangar in the heart of the UK climbing scene. It's a big moment for The Hangar. I can’t wait to give everyone a warm Hangar welcome and bring our brand of irreverent psyche to Sheffield's climbers.

“Climbing culture lives on and off the mats, so our cafe is there to help you fuel or recover; to tell your latest climbing adventure story or to meet up and shoot the breeze. With ethically-sourced local coffee, our own sourdough pizzas, fresh daily, healthy specials and of course, cake, we can feed your ambition or your family. We don't mind either way.”

The Climbing Hangar started life in a Liverpool warehouse in 2011 and has grown to become a national business, with 70 employees and more than 12,000 climbers coming through the doors every month. TCH Sheffield will be its sixth centre.
