Sheffield Hallam, Biology student Hannah Read from Ranmoor, spent Christmas entering several competitions after an arduous year of lockdown, including homeschooling and studying herself.

With Hannah due to start her PGCE in September, bills needing paying and the financial after-effects of covid, she was hopeful to re-start her hobby as a comper and potentially win big to financially support her family.

Hannah struck it lucky when entering Puzzle Digest’s free online crossword competition where entrants were asked to find the missing TV show – having successfully found ‘Doctor Who’, Hannah was instantly entered in the draw.

The mum of two who lives with her husband Jon was ‘overwhelmed’ after finding out she’d won the competition hosted by Puzzle Digest.

Hannah said: “It’s overwhelming and unexpected. In the past, I used to enter competitions yet never won that much, so I stopped. Winning with Puzzle Digest has made my year! After all of the things my children have missed out on during the lockdown, this money will be invaluable, and we’ll have a lot of fun spending it! The main thing is that I won’t have to worry as much about income before I start my PGCE in September.”

With social distancing in place, Puzzle Digest was able to present Hannah with her prize at her home in Ranmoor on Wednesday, April 7.

Clare Haddon, from Puzzle Digest, said: “Puzzle Digest has given away nearly £750k in cash prizes to both individuals and charities since their conception ten years ago. It’s fabulous to be able to present Hannah with this fantastic prize and to come to this wonderful city Sheffield and spread a bit of joy in times when we’re in all need of a pick me up.”
