5. The GEM Rolls Royce engine.
In 2001 the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre was established by the University of Sheffield and the aerospace company Boeing. The Rolls-Royce Factory of the Future opened there in 2008. The centre developed an engine which now flies on Boeing aircraft. Photo: Richard Baker

7. Shorthand.
Timothie Bright was a physician and clergyman in 16th century Sheffield. He wrote a book in 1588 called Characterie, laying out the founding principles of shorthand. Photo: Bildagentur-online
8. The Bessemer steel process.
Henry Bessemer, born in 1813, made his fortune in Sheffield from his Bessemer process for steel. This was the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron. Photo: DEA / ICAS94
