Parking is free for blue badge holders, and motorcycles can park for free in any parking bay except for ones reserved for disabled people.

The council has said that income from the car park “directly supports the maintenance of Endcliffe Park”.

This comes shortly after visitors to the park expressed surprise when they saw pay and display meters appearing a few weeks ago.

Residents in the area have speculated that the introduction of the parking charges may be because people were commonly leaving their cars in the park’s car park and then going into town.

One person wrote on a local area Facebook group: “The reason that SCC have put this up is that most people parking there were either going to work or shopping.”

And the reaction to the charges has been mixed.

One parent wrote: “I agree with discouraging people who park all day and head to work but couldn’t they have done free hour or something for people just taking their kids to the park?”

However another criticised the move, saying: “Fantastic, we can look forward to having even more people parking on the residential roads in the area.”
