The sad news was revealed on the Derbyshire country house’s website today, with organisers saying the health and safety of visitors remained their ‘main priority’.

The markets will instead be replaced with a ‘virtual’ event featuring details of all the stallholders who would have attended on the Chatsworth website later in the autumn.

A Chatsworth spokesperson said: “We have taken the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Christmas market. Our main priority remains the health and wellbeing of our visitors, colleagues, exhibitors and partners, and this decision reflects that.

“The Christmas market is one of our most special events, with a wonderful atmosphere that is incredibly popular. We have been working closely with our partners in the local planning department, as well as our internal stakeholders, to assess if we could have run the market without compromising safety or the quality of the event. Unfortunately we do not feel this is possible in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We would like to thank all those who play such a vital role in the event’s success, including exhibitors, local communities, visitors and colleagues. We apologise for the disappointment this decision may cause, but believe that it is the most responsible course of action.

“We hope to welcome everyone back in 2021, when we aim to make the Chatsworth Christmas market even more special.”

In addition to the virtual Christmas markets, other Chatsworth Christmas events will still be taking place, beginning on November 7.
