Local lad and former X-factor star Jake Quickenden officially marked the start of the festivities by hitting the big switch after performing. He was the highlight of a star-studded line-up helping warm up the crowds.

Britain's Got Talent's Siobhan Phillips and local BGT star Kyle Tomlinson also provided the entertainment.

Here's how the night went down, according to Sheffielders.

One woman wrote: "It was lovely attending the Christmas lights switch on this evening in Sheffield city centre."

And The National Emergency Services Museum tweeted: "Amazing day today at the Sheffield Christmas Lights event. Thanks to everyone who came out in the rain to say 'Hi'".

Sheffield's First Aid Society described the event as "the busiest you will see Sheffield city centre all year."

But the heaving crowds weren't to everyone's taste.

One woman wrote: "It was fantastic but sadly spoilt by ignorant arrogant people just pushing their way past, barging into people that were holding children."

Several people also complained it's too early for the festive display. Bah humbug.

Although one woman hit back at the moaners. She wrote: "I love the switch on, I love the lights and I love that it brightens up Sheffield this time of year! Everyone complaining it's too early, would you prefer to do your shopping in the dark?"
