Football star Jamie Vardy was born in Sheffield and grew up in Hillsborough. The 33-year-old was in Sheffield Wednesday’s youth squad but was released aged 16. Since then, Vardy has played for a number of professional teams and settled at Leicester City during the 2012-13 season. He helped the club defy the odds to win the Premier League for the first time at the end of the 2015/16, having entered the season as underdogs who faced relegation the year before. Sheffield has its own walk of fame, and the star-shaped plaques bearing the names of the city’s most famous sons and daughters are located outside the Town Hall in the city centre. Those selected for the honour must also be famous outside of the city. Among those included are Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sebastian Coe, Sean Bean, Gordon Banks, Def Leppard, David Mellor, Joe Scarborough and Tony Foulds who is the most recent recipient to receive a star.
