Odd show is sure to Paul the crowds

LONG before he decided to put his wigs on ebay this week, veteran magician Paul Daniels was sprinkling his charm on a family friendly and funny version of Hamlet.

Bound for The Lamproom, Barnsley, on February 3, the recent Strictly Come Dancing contestant appears via hologram as the ghost of Hamlet's father in touring theatre company Oddsocks' national tour with the Shakespeare classic.

"One of the best bits about my job is designing and working on special effects for theatre," says Paul.

"When Oddsocks came up with this idea I jumped at the chance of not only being in Shakespeare - a first for me - but also being a special effect myself.

"I am really looking forward to being spooky."

Oddsocks Productions have earned a reputation for introducing new audiences to the classics by performing accessible often hilarious versions of Shakespeare across the country.

"The role of the ghost in Hamlet is a key one and drives the production, so it was important to find a performer with warmth and status," says artistic director Andy Barrow.

"Paul is a great choice because his image is of fun, warmth and magic.

"We were delighted he accepted the challenge."

As well as featuring humour, illusion and technical wizardry, the show contains original rock music by Rob Harris, lead guitarist with Jamiroquai.

Ticket cost 15 (adults), 13 (conc) via 01226 200075.
