Students to help create garden

STUDENT architects from Sheffield University are set to transform the grounds of a children's respite centre by creating a sensory garden.

A six-week project at the Chancet Wood Centre is now under way, with a deadline of November 9 for the work's completion.

The centre at Beauchief offers daytime and overnight care for children, aged seven to 19, with a range of physical and learning disabilities so they may have a change from their home environment and their parents can have some time to themselves.

Although the centre has attractive, spacious grounds, they fail to meet the children's needs as there is just a small outdoor paved area with no access to most of the grounds.

The project is being taken on by a group of 10 fifth- and sixth-year students who will take on the task as if it were a genuine commercial operation.

The team hopes to complete a section of the garden for immediate use by the children in six weeks and, in the long term, aim to address access issues to the wider grounds.

The centre have already raised more than 1,600 through the Prince's Trust towards the garden and outdoor artwork, although further funding is required to complete the whole project.
