Students' arrival prompts traffic hold-ups

STUDENTS arriving for the start of the academic year at Sheffield universities caused traffic to slow to a crawl in some parts of the city at the weekend.

Thousands of students arrived in the city, many of them in cars laden with computers, books and bedding.

And with football traffic heading for Hillsborough, the normally busy roads were full to capacity.

Council bosses have apologised for the problems, which were also made worse by ongoing road works at Park Square and Bramall Lane.

Coun Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for transport and streetscene at Sheffield Council, said: "The public will have noticed there was significant traffic congestion around the city centre on Saturday.

"This appears to have been caused by a large number of students arriving in the city at both Hallam and Sheffield Universities for the start of the new academic year.

"The effect of the large number of additional cars was made worse by the extensive roadworks taking place at the weekend.

"While council officers did all they could to manage the traffic, there were inevitable delays to the travelling public, for which we apologise."
