Steve backs down in row on Owls logo

A BUSINESSMAN threatened with legal action over a sign incorporating the Sheffield Wednesday crest has taken it down after negotiations with the club reached a stalemate.

Wednesdayite Steve Harr-ison used the famous Owls motif on a sign outside his snooker club Trickshots on Bradfield Road at Hillsborough Corner.

He said it was his way of showing support for the club.

But Wednesday bosses claimed he was breaking their copyright and gave him 14 days to remove the badge, saying failure to do so would result in legal proceedings.

Mr Harrison then received an email from Suzanne Smith, Wednesday's marketing executive, offering to allow him to use the motif if he got his customers to support the Owls Superdraw.

It read: "The criteria for this would be that Trickshots must bring in 50 paying customers per week.

"If this is something you feel you would like to be involved in, then Sheffield Wednesday will be able to grant permission for Trickshots to use the Owls Superdraw logo only."

But Mr Harrison, aged 35, said he could not guarantee to raise 50 per week.

He had no choice but to take the sign down.

"I have been a Wednesdayite all my life and will continue to support the club, though I cannot guarantee to raise 50 from my customers each and every week.

"Even if I could there are many people who use my snooker club who wouldn't thank me for raising money which could be used to sue fans for criticising the club on websites.

"That's just not right.

"I am left with little choice but to take down the sign."

Sheffield Wednesday FC declined to comment.
