Soccer stars will wear pink for breast cancer day

THEIR colours of choice are normally red and white... but Sheffield United players shook and stirred the two for a Think Pink cocktail day at Weston Park hospital.

Blades stars James Beattie, Jon Stead, Geoff Horsfield and Lee Hendrie helped serve exotic drinks to patients on the wards to highlight the Think Pink campaign - which this year has been widened to include all women's cancers, not just breast cancer.

Matron Sue Shepley, who also helped serve trays of beverages from cups of hot tea to ice-cool cocktails, said the drinks-round is a regular occurrence - although the waiters aren't always so athletic!

"They seem to have had a really good response," she said.

This Saturday is national Think Pink Day and, to mark the occasion, Sheffield United will play their home game against Preston North End wearing pink shirts featuring the breast cancer logo.

Fans are also encouraged to wear pink on the day, and 3 from every 15 ticket will be donated to the Weston Park Cancer Appeal.

Jon Stead said: "It is very important for us to support events like this all over the city. On Saturday we will be wearing the pink shirts so hopefully everyone will see we are supporting a worthy cause."

Patient Jayne Naylor, aged 49, from Hillsborough, who was diagnosed with colon cancer two-and-a-half years ago, had her cocktail poured and served by Lee Hendrie and James Beattie.

"It is nice that they have made this extra effort - it cheers people up which is what a lot of the patients need," she said.
