Sixth formers flying high with win in airport design contest

SIXTH formers from a South Yorkshire school were on top of the world after tasting triumph in a challenge to design a better airport.

The team from Aston Comprehensive, on the Sheffield-Rotherham border, defeated three other schools in the final of the Airport Project Challenge, held at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, near Barnsley.

The brief was to design better facilities for disabled passengers at Heathrow Airport's Terminal Four, with the event being staged as part of National Construction Week.

The Aston team defeated Wath Comprehensive and schools from Leeds and Knaresborough.

All the students involved had won their regional heats and, in the final, were given a task as if they were in charge of their own construction company.

Sue Rawson, of Construction Skills Yorkshire and Humber, said the design work had been carried out successfully and to a high standard.

She added: "I think it was very beneficial for the students."
