Shops cordoned off after freak accident

A ROW of city centre shops in Sheffield was cordoned off this afternoon after a glass window pane fell from a nightclub above, narrowly missing pedestrians.

The Early Learning Centre, Mothercare, Derbyshire Building Society and furniture store Multiyork were sealed off with police tape after the mirrored glass pane from Kingdom nightclub fell to the pavement below and smashed.

The Early Learning Centre and Mothercare are allowing customers in through their back doors, but the other shops have been forced to temporarily close on safety grounds.

Engineers were on the scene this afternoon to assess the rest of the glass panes before the shops can re-open.

One shop assistant said: "It is really lucky that nobody was walking past at the time because they would have been seriously hurt or even worse.

"This is a really busy part of town normally, there are always parents here with children going into Mothercare and Early Learning.

"Some of the shops have been able to open their back doors, but I am sure we will all be losing money because of this."
