Shoppers give £3,000 to floods appeal

GENEROUS shoppers at a Sheffield supermarket clubbed together to help their neighbours whose homes were devastated in last summer's floods.

Visitors to Asda, in Chapeltown, donated 3,106 to the South Yorkshire Community Foundation's Flood Disaster Relief Fund during bucket collections at the store.

Staff also contributed to the massive clean-up operation - by helping to cook breakfasts for those made homeless by the floods, and taking supplies of water and cleaning products to the Winn Gardens estate, in Middlewood.

The relief fund, set up in conjunction with the four South Yorkshire councils, has now hit the milestone 1 million mark - but organisers are still appealing for people to dig deep and think of more fundraising ideas.

Chief executive Pauline Grice said: "The support has been amazing but we need to urge people to give more as the need for support will last 12-18 months."

n There are several ways to donate: at branches of Yorkshire Bank using account number 21890701 sort code 05-08-3; at branches of Barnsley Building Society quoting SYCF Flood Disaster Relief Fund; at branches of Natwest using account number 22293973 sort code 56-00-09; or by cheque made payable to SYCF Flood Disaster Relief Fund with a gift aid form to South Yorkshire Community Foundation, Clay Street, Attercliffe, Sheffield, S9 2PF.
