It’s already been a summer to remember for many of us in Sheffield following a series of incredible gigs like Def Leppard’s homecoming, lots of fun nights out watching the England football team almost bring home the FIFA World Cup - and also a scorching heatwave, which has allowed many of us to bask in the sun and celebrate occasions such as birthdays, prom night celebrations, weddings, family barbecues and everything in between.
But there’s still plenty more to come in terms of events in the coming months, particularly now school is officially out for summer and the six-week holidays are in full swing.
It all starts this weekend as Tramlines Festival prepares for its grand return to Hillsborough Park. Tramlines, which name is inspired by the city's tram network, was founded in 2009 and has continued to grow from strength to strength ever since with names like the Stereophonics, Pulp, Sam Fender and Kasabian among others all headlining the iconic festival over the last decade.
Tramlines is renowned for treating fans to an excellent line-up - and this year is no exception.
Huge crowds are once again expected to descend on the Steel City to see names like Fatboy Slim, Kaiser Chiefs, The Vaccines, Courteeners, Blossoms, Rick Astley, Wet Leg, Wolf Alice and hometown favourites Reverend & The Makers along with a series of other great acts.
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "We're making it even easier this year for people to get there and back - we've got extra trams running when it's busiest, and we're trying out some new ticket offers too.”
Running alongside the Tramlines Festival for those not in attendance at Hillsborough Park is The Fringe. This event features hundreds of live performances from up-and-coming young artists aswell as sets from talented DJs. It’s free to see and as ever takes place in lots of different bars, clubs and venues across the city centre aswell as outdoor spaces like Devonshire Green.
Even if you're out of town entirely for Tramlines, there’s still plenty to in the weeks to come for music lovers, including the highly-anticipated return of Rock N Roll Circus at Don Valley.
Taking place from Thursday August, 27 to Sunday, August 30, organisers have described this year’s event as the biggest and boldest to date with 40 live artists and 40 circus acts. Their programme opens with a celebration of one of British indie's defining records as The Kooks perform Inside In/ Inside Out in full to mark its 20th anniversary, joined by Sheffield heroes Milburn, celebrating Well, Well, Well in full, and indie favourite Miles Kane.
Friday belongs to The Streets, whose performance of A Grand Don't Come For Free in full, promises to be one of the defining live shows of the Bank Holiday weekend.
Saturday sees one of the UK's most exciting bands, Wunderhorse, headline what is currently expected to be their only outdoor headline show of the summer, joined by Baxter Dury, English Teacher, Fat Dog in one of the strongest supporting line-ups anywhere in the country.
The weekend reaches its finale on Sunday as former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft, fresh from his acclaimed stadium performances supporting Oasis, brings a greatest hits set to Don Valley Bowl alongside The Fratellis, Cast and Yorkshire favourites, Embrace.
And it’s not just music that the Steel City is specialising in.
The Abbeydale Road Beer Festival runs from July 30 - August 2 and is spread across 15 different bars.
There’s also Wing Fest from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 16 at Forge Warehouse and the second annual Graves Park Food Festival from Saturday, August 29 to Monday, August 31 to mark the Bank Holiday weekend.
There’s also family fun days like Sheffield Fayre at Norfolk Park on Monday, August 31 and if you are more interested in the arts, there’s also Art in the Gardens on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6.
Sheffielders also have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the big TV stars during the filming of the BBC series Gladiators at the Utilita Arena.
Fans can apply for free tickets to be part of the audience for the televised show recordings across various dates in July and August.
