Sheffield DocFest celebrates its 33rd edition with a new strand tailored towards the next generation
Families will be treated to all kinds of events
For the first time ever, one of the leading film festivals in the UK has launched a brand new strand tailored towards children, young people and families.
Running between 6 - 15 June as part of Sheffield DocFest, GEN DocFest is designed to inspire the next generation of fans and budding creators by offering them a combination of live performances, hands-on workshops and surprising true stories which allow them to see the world differently.
Families will be treated to all kinds of events including a behind the scenes look at CBBC hit comedies Horrible Histories & Horrible Science where the casts of both shows come together to share secrets about the programme. Some of the cast include Jess Ransom, Inel Tomlinson and Richard David-Caine, songwriter Richie Webb, Executive Producer Simon Welton, Costume Designer Jemima Cotter. In partnership with Lion TV and BBC.
They’ll also be a programme of events, known as WILD which celebrates the 100th birthday of the beloved documentary maker, Sir David Attenborough, with a day of adventure.

Audiences are also offered a peek behind the curtain of the BAFTA-nominated Educating Yorkshire with headteacher Matthew Burton, creator David Clews, and current pupils from the series. This event is designed to show how both the school and series have changed over the last decade.
An interactive live performance known as The Explorers in Training! Is another thing for youngsters to look forward to. FRONTLINEdance places disabled people and those with long-term health conditions at the core of their organisation as leaders, dancers, artists and audiences. They create exciting, relevant and thought-provoking contemporary dance with d/DEAF, visually impaired, disabled, neurodivergent audiences and hospital patients.
Mimi Poskitt, Managing Director, Sheffield DocFest said: “We are extremely proud of how this year’s programme reflects the dynamic ways people engage with non-fiction storytelling - seeking out immersive, innovative and thought-provoking experiences. It’s also why we decided to launch GEN DocFest, a new strand dedicated to children and families. Not only does this underscore our dedication to welcoming and inspiring the next generation of audiences and creators, but it will also help to ensure the documentary form remains inclusive, accessible and relevant for generations to come.”
