The traditional Christmas lights switch-on was cancelled in 2022 because of crowd safety fears, with renovation work on Fargate and Pinstone Street forcing organisers to change their plans.

The annual celebration had previously attracted up to 40,000 people, but the council said the building work meant arrangements needed to be altered.

Now, Sheffield is preparing to welcome people back for a new Christmas celebration at Devonshire Green, as part of a wider weekend of festive events across the city centre.

The free, ticketed event will run from 3pm to 6.30pm on Sunday, November 15, with live performances from Planet Abba, Taylor Swift tribute act Katy Ellis and the Jingle Girls, who will perform traditional Christmas songs.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy festive food and drink from local suppliers before the celebrations build towards a laser and light spectacular.

Christmas trees around Devonshire Green will also be lit up as part of the event.

Councillor Ben Miskell, chair of Sheffield City Council's Economic Development, Skills and Culture Committee, said the celebration would offer a new way for people to come together at the start of the festive season.

He said: “This Christmas is shaping up to be a really exciting one for Sheffield and our new celebration at Devonshire Green will be a brilliant way to bring people together and get the festive season underway.

“We’ll have live music, festive food and drink and a spectacular light show, all building up to the lighting of the Christmas trees around Devonshire Green.

“We wanted to bring something new to this part of the city centre and create an event that families and friends can enjoy together.”

The Devonshire Green celebration will be part of Sheffield's Christmas opening weekend on Saturday, November 14, and Sunday, November 15.

Sheffield's Christmas markets will open earlier in the week, on Thursday, November 12, with more than 50 cabins planned across Fargate, Pinstone Street and The Moor.

More than 80 per cent of traders are expected to be from the local area.

Further festive attractions will include the return of an artificial ice rink to Tudor Square for the first time in more than a decade, a snow slide on Surrey Street and Christmas lights across more of the city centre.
