Sheep hit by movement ban at market

THOUSANDS of sheep were left in limbo at a Bakewell cattle market after an animal movement ban was imposed following another outbreak of foot and mouth disease.

Derbyshire police helped officials from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to keep 12,000 sheep inside the Bakewell Agricultural Business Centre yesterday afternoon until a decision could be made about their future.

Restricted movement was allowed in the evening.

Bakewell wasn't the only market to be affected - at least 1,300 cattle were also stranded in Carlisle, Cumbria.
