Services with a smile as veterans pass on their experience to pupils

SKILLS from the services were passed on to pupils at a celebration day held at a Sheffield primary school.

With the help of heritage project Green Estate, older pupils at Emmaus School in Wybourn have been meeting and working with local ex-servicemen and women.

The project culminated in a day-long event at the Manor Oaks Farmhouse which gave the children chance to show off the things they’d learnt.

Among the skills showcased were map reading, drills, signalling and the use of the phonetic alphabet.

The pupils also unveiled a memorial bench for the veterans’ fallen comrades with feature plaques designed by the youngsters themselves.

“This was a fascinating project - the veterans were able to explain to the children about all the skills they’d picked up in the services,” added Green Estate heritage trainee Simone Singleton.
