Schoolchildren join UK premier

SHEFFIELD schoolchildren joined thousands of others from around the world to sing to the death of poverty at a special concert.

Pupils from Dobcroft Junior School in Millhouses and Greystones Primary School in Banner Cross took part in the Poverty Requiem at Ranmoor Church.

The event was the UK premier of the requiem following its world launch in Kenya earlier this year.

Another concert was due to be held in the Winter Gardens today - the official day of action by the Global Campaign Against Poverty, which also coincided with the UN day for the eradication of poverty.

The requiem - chosen to signify the death of poverty - is a vibrant, rhythmic piece of world music led by African artists which has been largely taught and memorised by ear.

The event was about demanding change to world trade systems, justices and democracy in the world's poorest nations.
