School maps way to award

A SHEFFIELD school is one of the first in the country to win a brand new award for the quality of its geography teaching.

Silverdale School at Bents Green has won a Secondary Geography Quality Mark Award for 2007 in recognition of its lively approach to the subject.

The school was praised for its enthusiastic and inspiring teachers and high quality curriculum, which included local fieldwork, environmental issues and dilemmas connected with sustainability.

Its teachers were showing confidence in developing the subject and used creative approaches to stimulate learning and placed a high value on using real life issues to promote understanding.

The school's subject leader John Hamshaw said it was great to have national recognition, adding: "The process of self evaluation has helped us recognise our strengths and areas for development.''
