Rivers run through heart of Sheffield

AN unlikely diet of Prince, Johnny Cash and Marillion helped shape No Machine, the brainchild of the Athenian-born Rivers brothers who head Under The Boardwalk on Wednesday.

They have played together since they were 13, experimenting with the darker side of pop music with thought provoking imagery, before a chance meeting in a Lisbon club brought a line-up. The idea behind the band name is simple: a real 'live' band with straightforward, expressive, 'human' songs.

Legendary rock and Judge Dredd comic artist Mark Wilkinson (Marillion, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden) was so enthusiastic about that he designed No Machine's cover art for music mixed by Mark Wallis (of U2, Travis, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Razorlight credit.)

FIREGARDEN are calling it a day - but they're not going out without a fuss.

The Sheffield bluesy rockers bow out on Monday with a show that sees various former members at The Boardwalk for guest slots.

"We are going to have a proper celebration here," says James Jeffrey, singer/bass player who is off travelling.

He's booked Nottingham metallers Skull Tanker and classic rock-metal outfit Freefold from Chesterfield as supports.

"And, as if this all wasn't enough, we have been in the studio on and off for the last month putting together an album of earth-shattering new tunes." Which they give away to the first 50 people through the door.

"Firegarden have been bumming around the Sheffield music scene for more than five," concludes James. "When we arrived nobody was singing with a quirky regional accent and everybody got on their knees and play an air guitar solo to I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness."
