Retiring police chief goes on 150-mile beat to say farewell

DERBYSHIRE'S police chief has pulled on his walking boots to say a personal goodbye to his colleagues as part of a 150- mile charity trek to mark his retirement next month.

David Coleman, who has been the county’s chief constable for six and a half years, will walk from Glossop in the north west of the county to Swadlincote in the south – passing virtually every police station in the region on the way.

Mr Coleman, who also has 30 years service as a police officer behind him, will cover 159.75 miles.

Five Derbyshire charities will benefit – the Derbyshire Association for the Blind, the Umbrella group which supports disabled children, Derbyshire Community Foundation, the Peak District Mountain Rescue and Sporting Futures – an organisation which uses sport to engage young people.

Mr Coleman, aged 54, said: “Traditionally the outgoing chief constable completes a final formal tour of duty around the county to say thanks and goodbye, but I thought why not do it differently and walk the whole way and raise some money for some important Derbyshire-based charities?”
