Reprieve for Tinsley towers

THE doomed Tinsley Cooling Towers have been given a temporary reprieve from demolition.

The huge Sheffield chimneys had been due to come down this weekend, but owners E.ON have moved the date back. A rescheduled date has not yet been fixed.

Permission had already been granted for the closure of the M1 this weekend to allow for the demolition, but this will not now be needed.

The 70-year-old towers are due to be razed to the ground because their structural condition is deteriorating, despite calls from some campaigners to retain them as a testament to the city's industrial heritage.
