Red panda introduced at Yorkshire Wildlife Park to protect endangered species
Two red pandas have been introduced for the first time at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
A young red panda has arrived at Yorkshire Wildlife Park as part of ongoing conservation efforts to protect the endangered species.
Ten-month-old Zemi has joined the park from Sparsholt College and has now been introduced to six-year-old Alice in the park’s Himalayan Pass reserve.

The pairing is part of a carefully managed breeding programme aimed at supporting the long-term survival of red pandas.
Alice first arrived at the park in 2022 alongside two other females, who have since been relocated to different zoos following recommendations from the European Endangered Species Programme.
Native to the Himalayan region, red pandas are currently classified as endangered due to habitat loss and declining populations.
Despite their name, they are not closely related to giant pandas, instead sharing closer links with raccoons and weasels.
Typically weighing around 7kg, they are similar in size to a domestic cat, although their long, bushy tails add significant length.

Dr Charlotte MacDonald, Director of Animals at the park, said staff are optimistic about the new pairing.
She explained that Zemi and Alice were initially introduced in a separate area before being moved into the main enclosure, where they can now be seen by visitors.
The pair have settled into the Himalayan Pass habitat, an area designed to reflect the temperate forests of southern Asia.
Alongside red pandas, the reserve is also home to species including otters and binturong.
Visitors may spot the animals resting high in the trees, a natural behaviour for the species.
The park has also introduced a hands-on experience, allowing guests to get closer to the animals and learn more about their diet and behaviour.
The arrival of Zemi marks another step in the park’s broader conservation mission, which focuses on protecting threatened species through breeding programmes, education and immersive visitor experiences.
